Skinny Mojito

Low Calorie & Sugar Free Skinny Mojitos Yaay!

The bulk of the calories in a Mojito are attributed to the alcohol used. For each shot of 80 proof rum or vodka you use in a drink count 64 calories. Flavored rums or vodkas have approximately 69 calories per one ounce.

Most drinks start with a jigger of distilled spirits. Distilled spirits include vodka, gin, rum, tequila, scotch, whiskey and more. A jigger measures 1.5 ounces so around 96 calories. Since the calories in your drink come from amount of alcohol in the drink, the mixers and the size of the drink really matters.

We have been making low calorie, low carb sugar free Mojito for years. Some are starting to call these drinks "Skinny-Girl Mojitos". Well why do only skinny girls get to have all the sensible drinking fun? We love to drink low carb and smarter and our girth or masculinity is never offended. If skinny girl Mojitos they are then so be it -- we are all skinny girls too!

Mixing your Mojito from scratch you have full control over the ingredients. We find this delightful summer cocktail both light and refreshing. We love them so much and drink them so often found a low calorie and sugar free Mojito mix to expedite consumption. This mix from Good Spirits adds less than 5 calories, only 1 carb and zero sugar in a 3 ounce serving so it is really the skinny way to go. If we are in the mood to make it look from scratch simply toss some fresh mint and maybe a lime wedge for natural flair. Using this mix is an easy way to enjoy the lighter side of cocktails and bring a low cal alternative to a party.

Honey vs Sugar

We tried lots of different low cal combinations. We did our homework to concoct the best tasting low calorie cocktails. What we learned was enlightening:) Lighter cocktail lovers beaware! If you follow the "Housewives" Skinny Girl Mojito Recipe you will add unnecessary carbohydrates and calories. She recommends using a half teasspoon of warm honey to sweeten your Mojito. Bad moy bad:(

Checking the Nutrition Facts on a jar of Pure Organic Honey that shows a tablespoon, 1 tablespoon  equals 3 teaspoons, of 100% pure organic honey has 60 calories, 17g of carbohydrates and 16g of sugar .

Using a teaspoon of real sugar only has 4g of sugar. We also checked the nutrition facts for the other ingredients. The bottled lime juice from concentrate we checked had Calories 10, Carbohydrates 2g, Sugars 2g in 1 teaspoon (5ml), and from the USDA Nutrient database we learned that a ½ fresh lime can add a few more carbs. Count up the added sugars and carbs and we think there is nothing skinny or lower calorie about the Housewives Skinny Mojito, nothing skinny at all.

Sugar Substitute

The simplest way to cut out some calories from your cocktail is to use a calorie free sugar substitute of your choice: pink, yellow or blue packets. Maybe even try one of the organic alernatives? What we know is that every sugar substitute lover has their favorite, stick with what you like and you cannot go wrong.
